Preparing Young People for the Real World of Work
The transition from school to the world of work is one of the biggest steps a young person will take. World of Work helps young people understand how the modern workplace works, how they can build their value, and how to turn their knowledge, skills and abilities into opportunities to earn, contribute and grow.
What Young People will gain
World of Work takes learners on a practical journey from understanding how the world of work is changing to building their own value, accessing opportunities and developing the resilience to succeed over the long term.
1. Understand the Modern World of Work
Understand how work is changing, where earning opportunities come from and what employers and customers value.
2. Build Your Market Value
Identify strengths, develop valuable skills and understand how your choices, behaviour and digital presence affect your opportunities.
3. Get Ready for Work
Learn how to find opportunities, present yourself effectively and develop the practical behaviours expected in the workplace.
4. Build for the Long Term
Develop resilience, adaptability and a personal strategy for continued growth in a changing world.
More Than Getting a Job
The world of work is changing. A successful future may include employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship, freelance work or a combination of different ways of earning over a lifetime.
World of Work therefore goes beyond traditional job-readiness. Young people learn to think about the value they can create, the problems they can solve and the skills they can develop — because the ability to create value is ultimately what creates opportunities to earn.
Create Value
Understand that earning starts with creating something that another person, customer or organisation values.
Create Opportunities
Learn to look beyond advertised jobs and recognise different ways of turning skills, knowledge and initiative into opportunities.
Build Independence
Develop the adaptability, confidence and resilience needed to take increasing responsibility for your own economic future.
Don’t just prepare for a job. Prepare to create value.
The World of Work Workshop
A practical 12-hour programme for high-school learners that bridges the gap between education and the realities of earning, employment and the modern workplace.
12 Hours
Four structured sessions combining practical learning, discussion and activities.
High-School Learners
Designed for young people preparing to make increasingly important subject, study and career decisions.
Practical & Interactive
Learners don’t simply hear about the world of work — they explore ideas, make decisions, complete activities and apply them to their own futures.
Four Sessions. One Journey.
Session 1 — The Modern Workplace & Earning Power
How the world of work is changing, what creates economic value and the different ways people can earn.
Session 2 — Building Your Market Value
Skills, attitude, behaviour, personal brand and the choices that make someone more valuable in the marketplace.
Session 3 — Getting the Job & Workplace Readiness
Finding opportunities, presenting yourself effectively and understanding the behaviours expected in a professional workplace.
Session 4 — Strategy, Resilience & Long-Term Success
Building adaptability, resilience and a personal strategy for continued learning, earning and growth.
Learners Leave With More Than Information
The aim is not simply for learners to know more about careers. Each learner should leave with a clearer understanding of how the world of work operates, what they can do to increase their own value and what practical steps they can begin taking now.
Already Put Into Practice
World of Work has already moved beyond the drawing board. The programme was piloted with learners at Parktown High School for Girls in Johannesburg, providing an opportunity to test the content, activities and delivery with real learners.
Feedback from the pilot has also helped shape the programme further, with an increased emphasis on learner participation, discussion and practical activities throughout the workshop.
Bring World of Work to Your School
Give your learners an opportunity to explore the realities of work, earning and career development before they have to make these decisions for themselves.
World of Work can be delivered in a format that works with your school’s timetable while retaining the full 12-hour learning journey.
